According to the Sefer Yetzirah, one of the oldest kabbalistic texts in existence, there are three Hebrew letters referred to as the "mother letters" because they embody three elemental, spiritual principles:

Aleph - Avir, air / primordial silence / balance / meditation

Mem - Mayim, water / passive energy / inhalation / receptivity, fluidity

Shin - e'SH, fire / creative energy / exhalation / transformation, action

The circular flow of these energies, in both directions, is necessary for the physical and spiritual health of any individual or collective entity.
